Song of the Week: Girls’ Lust for Life


They may call themselves Girls, but they’re yet two more Brian Wilson-loving lo-fi surf-rock dudes, this time from sunny San Francisco as opposed to sunny L.A. or sunny Orlando. And while I’m having less and less patience for this sound, and Pitchfork’s fascination with it, I’ve enjoyed this song and its jangly garage-rock beat ever since it leaked several weeks ago. And now Matador is offering the track for free download, along with info to stream the full Girls album, called Album. As you can tell, despite the rocking simplicity of “Lust for Life,” Girls aren’t the most original band in the world. Give it a listen before summer’s over...
